Bridging the Divide: Bringing Youth of the Islam World and the U.S. Face to Face

Global Nomads Group is a nongovernmental educational organization that uses interactive technology to foster dialogue and understanding among the world's youth. Specifically, GNG has conducted programs in more than 40 countries, linking more than 10,000 students each year from around the world to meet one another face-to-face and discuss the international issues that affect them. Global Nomads Group would like to present an interaction in this year’s special ten-year-anniversary Megaconference that demonstrates the power of videoconferencing in joining diverse groups of students to tackle some of the globe’s most pressing issues. From our headquarters in New York, we will link together a group of high school students from Futures Tech School in Cairo, Egypt, and their counterparts at Passaic Valley Regional High School in New Jersey, U.S. These students came together to discuss the divide between the East and the West in December 2007 and February 2008 in an ongoing GNG program called “Arab World and the U.S.” In this conference, students will talk about what they have learned from each other and how their stereotypes were challenged in the previous videoconferences. After we briefly explain our organization’s work, this interaction will include highlights from the videoconferences between Egyptian and American students. Then, both groups will share what surprised them from the interaction and what has stayed with them since. About GNG Founded in 1998, GNG is dedicated to heightening young people’s understanding and appreciation of the world and its people. Using existing videoconferencing technology in thousands of schools nationwide and around the world, we connect students in grades K-12 and facilitate (virtual) town hall discussions on global issues like the HIV/AIDS crisis, the war in Iraq, and the situation in Darfur. Our programs allow students to gain exposure to the cultures and viewpoints of their peers around the world, preparing them to be active members of a global society and agents of positive social change. To date, GNG’s novel, cross-cultural work has been featured in media outlets that include CNN (Inside Africa), Good Morning America, This Week with George Stephanopoulos, the Today Show, the New York Times, and Education Week. In 2005, GNG was recognized by two reputable education advocacy groups: The United States Distance Learning Association and the Goldman Sachs Foundation. Our special feature documentary, Rwanda Alive (based on our educational program of the same name), was declared Best Documentary at the 2006 International Beverly Hills Film Festival.

Local & International Collaboration in the K-20 Classroom

The technology of videoconferencing breaks through geographical boundaries and brings people from around the globe together, enabling real-time interchanges with schools all over the world simultaneously. National Dali Senior High School (Taichung, Taiwan), Cambridge Isanti High School (Minnesota, USA) and Taikyu High School (Yuasa, Japan) have conducted real-time interactive courses in various subject areas for over two years. Types of connection and teaching methods used in implementing the courses vary according to the content of videoconferencing. For instance, in addition to the usual three or two site connections, in certain courses, other schools are invited to connect in, acting as either active participants or audience. Furthermore, interactive participants consist of not only high school students but also pre-service teachers and elementary school students. It is hoped that through sharing and discussion of these diverse international interactions, more innovative ideas will be sparked for further use of videoconferencing in education and research.

Doarn, MBA,1,2 Rachel Brown, MD,3 Arif Khan, PhD,1,4, Michael McGill, PhD5, David Gray6 1Telehealth Video Resources Center; 2Center for Surgical Innovation, Department of Surgery University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH; 3Nationwide Childrens Hospital Medical Center, Columbus, OH; 4Ohio Supercomputer Center, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH;5Internet 2, Columbus, OH; and 6World Bank, Washington, DC Information and communications technology (ICT) have bridged societies from across the globe to enable collaborations in a variety of disciplines. Whether it is access to news, sports or entertainment, the world is smaller than ever before. The ability for the developing world to gain knowledge about new approaches in such areas as healthcare, public health, or business has been supported by government, industry and world-wide agencies, such as the World Bank. Healthcare organizations utilize new tools to reach out to their community, providing new services in health monitoring, patient management, and education. This is evident in the unmet need of many who wish to be linked together for enhancing educational awareness and enabling better access. To this end, the World Bank, Internet 2, the State of Ohio Governor’s Office, The Ohio Board of Regents, and the Ohio Super Computer Center have partnered together to establish the non profit, Telehealth Video Resources Center (TVRC) to serve as a resource for video services linking people to people statewide, nationally and internationally. This service is modeled after the World Bank’s initiatives and will serve as a significant tool for telehealth activities. Access is through a robust Web portal, rich with information and capabilities. The TVRC is a financially supported through membership, philanthropy and collaborative partnerships. This presentation will highlight the TVRC strategic initiatives and will showcase how theses services are utilized to enable telehealth using a neonatal case at Columbus, Ohio’s Nationwide Childrens Hospital. TVRC will utilize state-of-the-art ICT to enable better healthcare across the globe.
